Great Fingall Mine office, heritage-listed building in Day Dawn, Western Australia
The Great Fingall Mine office is a stone building with a gable roof built around 1902 in Day Dawn to serve as the main administrative center for mining operations. Inside it contains rooms with fireplaces and a secure strong room that once held valuable documents and materials from the mine.
The mine was discovered in 1891 and the office was built around 1902 as the settlement of Day Dawn grew rapidly. The mine ceased operations in 1918 due to economic conditions and the outbreak of World War One, causing the town to be abandoned.
Italian stonemasons built this structure during the gold rush era, and many Italian workers were employed at the mine. The building reflects how mining communities developed and how workers shaped the character of settlements in Western Australia.
The site is located in Day Dawn near the town of Cue and is now a protected heritage location with limited public access. Visitors should be prepared for isolated terrain with scattered remnants of the abandoned town and exposure to wind and open landscape.
This is now the only substantial building remaining in Day Dawn while the rest of the town has vanished completely. The advancing open cut mine threatens its survival as the pit edge gradually wears closer to the structure year after year.
