Yungngora Community, Indigenous community in Kimberley region, Western Australia
Yungngora Community is an Indigenous settlement located along the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley region. It sits roughly 280 kilometers east of Broome and about 100 kilometers southwest of Fitzroy Crossing in northern Western Australia.
The pastoral lease at Noonkanbah was acquired for the community in 1976, marking the beginning of land rights recognition. The territory was officially returned to the community in 2001 as confirmation of their land claims.
The community speaks multiple languages including Kriol, Walmajarri, Nyikina, and Bardi in daily life. These languages connect people to traditional ceremonies and storytelling that remain central to how the community shares its heritage.
The Kulkarriya Community School serves students from pre-primary through Year 12 following Western Australian curriculum standards. The school includes specialized educational programs designed for Indigenous learners.
The community operates a hybrid energy system that combines diesel generators with a solar power array and battery storage. This approach helps provide reliable electricity while reducing dependence on a single energy source.
