Kunstkring Art Gallery, Art gallery and restaurant in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.
Kunstkring Art Gallery is a two-story building in the Dutch colonial style located in Central Jakarta, with tall ceilings and large windows that face the Menteng neighborhood. The ground floor holds a restaurant serving Indonesian food, and the upper floor displays contemporary art alongside antique furnishings.
The building opened in 1914 as the headquarters of the Fine Arts Circle of the Dutch East Indies, designed by architect Pieter Moojen. It served as the Immigration Office from 1950 to 1997, after which a restoration brought it back to its original cultural use.
The place preserves its connection to the Dutch colonial era and now functions as a space for contemporary art exhibitions and cultural events. Visitors can explore the architecture while discovering current artistic works displayed throughout.
The two floors serve different purposes, so visitors can easily move between the restaurant and the art space without any overlap. Spending time on both levels gives a fuller sense of what the building offers.
For nearly 50 years, the building was known to most Jakarta residents simply as the place where immigration paperwork was handled, not as an art space. The current gallery use is actually a return to the building's original role, not a new one.
