Slamet Riyadi, Military commander in Surakarta, Indonesia.

Slamet Riyadi was an Indonesian military commander who led the 26th Regiment and directed operations across Central Java. He received training at Dutch schools and a Japanese naval academy, which shaped his tactical methods.

Riyadi played a central role during Operation Product in 1947, when he led Indonesian troops through battles in Ambarawa and Semarang against Dutch colonial forces. This campaign was a turning point in the independence struggle for the region.

His name Slamet came from a Javanese healing tradition where a child was symbolically sold to ward off illness. This practice reflected local beliefs and became part of the military leader's personal identity.

Information about him is mainly found in military archives and historical documents from the Indonesian independence period. Visitors interested in this era will encounter references to his role in museums and memorial sites throughout Central Java.

While leading an operation to suppress a rebellion in Ambon in 1950, Riyadi sustained fatal injuries from a bullet that ricocheted off a tank. This unexpected death ended the life of one of the independence movement's leading military figures.
