Purworejo is an administrative division in Central Java, Indonesia, located south of Yogyakarta. The regency covers sixteen districts with rural villages and small towns scattered between rice paddies and gentle hills.
An inscription from the year 901 on wood records early settlement during the Hindu Mataram period. The region later developed into a separate administrative unit under Javanese and Dutch rule.

Kutoarjo railway station connects the area to other cities on the southern Java line. Local markets and villages are best reached by small buses or motorcycle taxis.
