Ullen Sentalu Museum, Javanese culture museum in Kaliurang highland, Indonesia
Ullen Sentalu Museum is a Javanese culture museum situated on the slopes of Mount Merapi in the Kaliurang highlands. The buildings combine European Gothic style with traditional Javanese architecture and spread across several exhibition areas on the hillside grounds.
The museum was founded by the Haryono family and opened in 1997 under royal patronage from Yogyakarta. It preserves artifacts and records from the Mataram kingdoms and the royal courts that shaped the region's heritage.
The name means "gathering place of memory" in Javanese, reflecting how the museum keeps local traditions alive for visitors and future generations. The exhibition spaces showcase royal objects like traditional instruments, batik textiles, and artwork that reveal the depth of Javanese cultural knowledge.
The site sits at a higher elevation with cooler temperatures, so bring a light layer or sweater for your visit. The pathways wind through the hillside grounds and are walkable, though sturdy shoes work best on the uneven terrain.
An underground gallery section called Guwa Sela Giri holds rare paintings and written records from the early Mataram dynasties not displayed elsewhere. This hidden space offers a closer look at personal moments from the royal families that shaped the region.
