The Lost World Castle, Castle attraction in Sleman, Indonesia.
The Lost World Castle is a castle-themed attraction on the slopes of Mount Merapi in Sleman, Indonesia, built from volcanic rock collected after the volcano's last major eruption. It covers several terraced levels, each with different decorated zones connected by walking paths.
The 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi destroyed many of the surrounding villages and left the slopes covered in debris and volcanic rock. In 2016, local residents founded this attraction to bring economic activity back to the area and give the damaged land a new purpose.
The walls are made from volcanic rock collected after the eruption, giving the site a raw and unusual look. Visitors can walk through decorated gates, painted walls, and photo spots inspired by Japanese television shows and fantasy worlds.
The site sits on a hillside with uneven terrain, so sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing are a good idea before heading in. Going in the morning tends to be more comfortable, as the sun can get very strong later in the day.
Much of the construction was done by local residents themselves, who gathered the volcanic rocks directly from the slopes after the eruption and built the walls by hand. This makes it one of the few tourist sites in Indonesia built almost entirely by the community it was created to support.
