Gunung Wukir, Hindu temple in Magelang, Indonesia
Gunung Wukir is a Hindu temple complex on a hilltop near Magelang featuring a main stone structure surrounded by three smaller religious buildings. The entire site occupies an area of roughly 50 by 50 meters.
Construction dates to 732 under King Sanjaya of the Medang Kingdom, as shown by an inscription discovered at the location. This inscription represents one of the earliest dated historical records from the region.
Stone carvings show representations of Nandi bulls and Yoni symbols connected to the worship of the Hindu god Shiva. These carvings offer insight into the religious practices that took place at this location.
The temple can be reached by climbing roughly 300 meters from the nearest village. Plan for the heat and allow time for the ascent when visiting.
The Canggal inscription found here from 732 is one of Indonesia's oldest written records. This artifact made the location a key witness to the beginnings of early kingdoms in the region.
