Candi Merak, Hindu temple in Karangnongko, Klaten, Indonesia.
Candi Merak is a Hindu temple in Karangnongko, Klaten, with a central structure measuring 8.38 meters on each side and reaching 12 meters in height. The complex is completed by three smaller shrines arranged around the main structure.
Discovery of the temple took place in 1925 during excavation work, when ancient structures and statues were uncovered beneath a large Joho tree. The collapse of the tree had brought these artifacts to the surface, making their investigation possible.
The temple displays intricately carved lotus flowers and geometric patterns that reflect the Hindu craftsmanship of its era. The depictions of Durga and Ganesha on the walls continue to serve as focal points for visitors' spiritual engagement today.
The temple is located roughly 33 kilometers from Yogyakarta and is reachable by car or motorcycle for visitors. Parking is available at the site, with modest fees charged for both vehicle types.
The temple's name comes from the numerous peacocks that nested in the branches of the ancient Joho tree before it collapsed. These birds were so prevalent at this location that they gave the shrine its name.
