Ijo Temple, Hindu temple in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Ijo Temple is a Hindu shrine on the western slope of Gumuk Ijo hill in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The complex consists of ascending terraces and stone structures spread across several levels.
An inscription from the year 906 mentions this site and points to an early settlement in this area. Later, the shrine was shaped by new influences that helped define its current form.
The name comes from the Javanese word for the green color of the hill where the shrine stands. Visitors today still see the old stone arrangement that played a role in religious ceremonies.
The site sits at an elevated position and the path leads upward over many steps. From the upper levels you look west across rice fields and see the airport in the distance.
The location on the hill prevents the nearby airport runway from being extended further east. Aviation regulations limit construction in the area, and the old shrine forms a natural boundary.
