Candi Dawangsari

Candi Dawangsari is a Hindu-Buddhist temple in Sambirejo built on three terraced foundations constructed from andesite stone blocks. These stepped bases create a layered structure that defines the site's physical character and demonstrates the craftsmanship of ancient builders.

The temple was built during a period when Hindu and Buddhist beliefs coexisted and influenced each other in the region. Archaeological excavations in the late 1980s uncovered buried structures that revealed the site's importance to local history.

The temple blends Hindu and Buddhist traditions, as shown by the stupas and Ganesha statue still visible among the ruins. This fusion reflects the spiritual practices that shaped the region over many centuries.

The site sits in a rural setting and is best explored on ground level where visitors can view the ruins from different angles. Wear comfortable shoes and plan for sun exposure if spending extended time here.

The original stupa dome likely had a diameter of about 11 meters and stood nearly 6 meters tall based on architectural analysis. These dimensions suggest the structure once rose prominently across the landscape and was visible from far away.
