UGM Campus Mosque, Modern mosque at Universitas Gadjah Mada campus, Indonesia.
This mosque on the Universitas Gadjah Mada campus is a modern building with a striking central dome and tall minaret. A courtyard with a reflective pool, inspired by the Taj Mahal, provides a quiet area for those visiting.
Construction started in 1998 on the grounds of a former cemetery. Architecture and engineering students from the university carried out the project, investing about 9.5 billion rupiah in the work.
The building brings together design elements from Arabic, Chinese, Indian, and Javanese traditions in a contemporary way. This mixing shows how people of different backgrounds gather and share this space.
The building can hold about 10,000 people and sits near stops for Trans Jogja public transport lines 4A and 4B. Visitors should check ahead to see which areas are open during their visit.
Students from the architecture and engineering programs planned and managed the entire project from start to finish. This hands-on student involvement at every stage helped keep costs well below what would normally be expected.
