Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Royal palace in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
The palace complex spans 1.4 hectares and features traditional Javanese architecture with floral patterns, joglo-style roofs, and multiple interconnected courtyards.
Construction of the palace began in 1755 and concluded in 1756 under Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, following the Treaty of Giyanti establishing the Sultanate of Yogyakarta.
The palace maintains traditional Javanese arts through regular performances of gamelan music, court dances, macapat poetry readings, and wayang puppet shows.
Visitors can access guided tours of the palace grounds, which include the main audience hall, museums displaying royal artifacts, and traditionally landscaped gardens.
In June 1812, British forces led by Sir Stamford Raffles attacked the palace, marking the first direct assault on a Javanese royal court during colonial times.
