Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum, Educational museum and library in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum is a museum and library in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, housed in a building that mixes European and Javanese architectural features within the Tamansiswa complex. Its nine rooms display furniture, manuscripts, photographs, and personal items, all kept in their original arrangement.
The building was bought from a Dutch plantation owner in 1934 and served as Ki Hadjar Dewantara's private residence. After he died in 1959, the house was turned into a museum to preserve what he left behind.
The museum is named after Ki Hadjar Dewantara, who believed that education should be open to every child regardless of background. Walking through the rooms, visitors see the books, writings, and everyday objects he left behind, giving a sense of how he lived and worked.
Allow enough time to visit all nine rooms, since each one covers a different part of the founder's life and work. A guided tour can help make sense of the objects on display and the stories behind them.
Ki Hadjar Dewantara's bedroom and work desk remain exactly where he last used them, which makes the space feel more like a lived-in home than a display room. This choice to leave everything in place makes it one of the few places in Indonesia where a public figure's daily environment is preserved without alteration.
