Besakih

Besakih is a large Hindu temple complex situated on Mount Agung's slopes with multiple levels and courtyards. The site contains numerous shrines linked by stone pathways and decorative gateways that guide visitors through the different sections.

This temple was founded in the 11th century and gained prominence as a major religious center. By the 15th century, it became the official state temple of the ruling Gelgel dynasty and maintained its importance ever since.

This place holds deep spiritual meaning for Balinese Hindus and serves as the spiritual heart of the island. You can observe devotees making offerings and performing rituals throughout the year, especially during ceremonial gatherings.

Visitors must wear traditional sarongs and sashes, which are available for rent at the entrance. The location is best reached through organized tours from major towns, and sturdy footwear is recommended for navigating the many stairs.

During Mount Agung's eruption in 1963, lava flows moved around the temple complex while destroying surrounding areas. The complex escaped damage and was seen by many as a sign of its spiritual power.
