Besakih

The temple complex spans six ascending levels with 23 separate structures connected by stone staircases and decorated gateways across multiple courtyards.

Established in the 11th century, Besakih Temple became the state temple of the Gelgel dynasty during the 15th century, solidifying its position in Balinese society.

The temple hosts 70 religious festivals annually according to the Pawukon calendar, with ceremonies occurring simultaneously across different shrines within the complex.

Visitors must wear traditional sarongs and sashes, available for rent at the entrance, and can access the site via organized tours from major cities.

During Mount Agung's 1963 eruption, lava flows moved around the temple structure, leaving the complex untouched while surrounding areas were destroyed.
