Fort Somba Opu

Fort Somba Opu is a stone fortification in Gowa Regency with walls extending across multiple kilometers and rising about eight meters high. The structure displays thick brick construction and has been partially reconstructed to show its original form.

The fort was built during the reign of King Gowa IX and served as a maritime trading center before Dutch forces destroyed it in 1669. This attack marked a turning point in regional history and ended the kingdom's independence.

The grounds contain traditional dwellings from South Sulawesi and the Karaeng Pattingaloang Museum displaying regional crafts and ceremonial objects. You can observe local building methods and traditional practices that continue to be part of daily life in this area.

You can explore the reconstructed grounds on foot, with access to gates, walls, and the museum located on-site. Guided tours are available at the entrance to help you navigate the sprawling area.

The fort houses a nine-meter-long cannon, one of the largest historical artillery pieces in the country. This massive weapon shows the military power the Gowa kingdom once held.
