Koolan Island, Iron ore mining island in Buccaneer Archipelago, Australia
Koolan Island is an island in the Buccaneer Archipelago off Western Australia that was developed as a mining center. The landscape includes coastal cliffs and spans a significant size suitable for large-scale operations.
Mining operations began in 1951 under a BHP subsidiary and continued for more than four decades. The site was closed in 1994 after extracting substantial quantities of high-grade ore.
The Dambimangari people have maintained their connection to this place through a partnership with the mining company established in 2006. This relationship reflects how indigenous ties to the land continue into modern times.
The island can only be reached by boat or helicopter from the mainland, located roughly 130 kilometers north of Derby. Visitors should expect remote conditions and limited facilities on the ground.
The mining settlement once featured an unusual combination where an airstrip doubled as a golf course for workers and residents. This resourceful use of limited space reveals how daily life was arranged in this isolated community.
