Discovery Bay Coastal Park, Coastal protected area in Victoria, Australia
Discovery Bay Coastal Park is a protected coastal area in Victoria that stretches from Cape Nelson toward the South Australian border. The landscape features limestone cliffs rising above the shoreline and broad expanses of sand dunes running inland from the beach.
The area was formally established as a coastal reserve in 1973 and received official protected status under national legislation in 1979. This recognition helped shield the fragile shoreline habitats from development pressure.
The area around Discovery Bay is home to several bird species that depend on the quiet beaches and shallow waters, particularly hooded plovers and little terns that nest here during breeding season.
The park has two camping areas at Lake Mombeong and Swan Lake, both offering direct access to the beach and walking routes along the coast. Either location works well as a base for exploring the dunes and shoreline.
The Long Swamp wetland system within the park is home to the ancient greenling damselfly, a species that has remained largely unchanged for millions of years, and also shelters the endangered ground parrot. Few visitors realize they are walking near one of Australia's most primitive living insects.
