Boat Harbour Beach
Boat Harbour Beach, town in Tasmania, Australia
Boat Harbour Beach is a small settlement on the northwest coast of Tasmania featuring a long sandy shoreline and clear blue waters. The place consists of two main parts: an upper town area and a lower beach community nestled near rocky headlands, complete with basic facilities such as parking areas, picnic spots, and a playground near the car park.
The settlement was originally called Jacobs' Boat Harbour, named after Captain John Jacobs who operated small trading vessels in the early 1800s. A small jetty was later built in the late 1800s to ship potatoes and other goods from the area, but its importance declined when the railway opened in 1915.
The settlement takes its name from the boats that once regularly came and went through the harbor, a connection that still shapes how locals view their home. Visitors can see how residents embrace a relaxed coastal way of life, gathering for outdoor activities like swimming, boating, and picnics throughout the year.
The settlement is located about 15 kilometers from Wynyard and is easily reached via a winding road that reveals scenic views as it descends a hillside. Visitors should know that the waters are generally calm and suitable for swimming and snorkeling, particularly during warmer months, while basic facilities such as toilets and change rooms are available near the beach.
The fine white sand at the beach was formed from weathered quartzite rocks found along this stretch of Tasmania, and some visitors consider it one of the best beaches in Australia. At low tide, visitors can discover abalone shells and other small treasures among the rocky edges, making it a favorite spot for those who enjoy exploring nature.
