Werribee Gorge State Park, State park in Shire of Moorabool, Australia

Werribee Gorge State Park is a protected area in the Shire of Moorabool, Victoria, where the Werribee River has cut deep through ancient rock to form a series of steep gorges and cliff faces. The surrounding land is covered in native bushland, and the river runs along the base of the gorge through pools and rocky sections.

The gorge took shape when tectonic movement along a fault line forced the river to cut deeper into the rock below. Over time, this process exposed layers of stone that formed long before the continent took its current shape.

The park is an important place for local Aboriginal communities, who have a deep connection to this land. Visitors walking through the gorge move through a landscape that has held meaning for Indigenous peoples across many generations.

The park has several entry points with parking, and the walking trails range from flat riverside paths to steeper routes along the cliff edges. Sturdy footwear and enough water are a good idea, as weather in the gorge area can shift quickly.

The cliff faces in the park expose rock layers that are over 400 million years old, showing traces of ancient glaciation and volcanic lava flows side by side. These two events are separated by hundreds of millions of years, yet both are visible in the same stone wall.
