Werribee Gorge State Park, State park in Shire of Moorabool, Australia

Werribee Gorge State Park is a protected area spanning roughly 1,200 hectares, where the Werribee River has carved deep gorges between cliff faces and dense native bushland. The landscape supports diverse native animal species that thrive across the park's different habitats.

The gorge formed roughly one million years ago through tectonic movement along a fault line that increased the river's cutting power through ancient sedimentary rock. This geological shift shaped the landscape into the form visitors see today.

The park holds several sites of significance to Indigenous peoples, marking their long connection to this landscape and serving as places where traditional knowledge remains visible in the land. These locations remain important to local Aboriginal communities today.

The park provides several entry points with parking facilities and walking trails suited to different skill levels from easy to challenging. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and water, as trails vary in difficulty and weather can change rapidly in the area.

The rock formations within the park show evidence of an ancient ice sheet advance and volcanic lava flows from over 400 million years ago. These ancient geological layers are visible along the cliff faces and tell the story of Earth across vast time periods.
