Melbourne Airport, International air transport hub in Victoria, Australia
Melbourne Airport sits in the City of Hume northwest of the city center and features four terminals serving international and domestic flights. Two intersecting runways stretch across the grounds and allow arrivals and departures at any hour.
The Commonwealth Government chose the site at Tullamarine in 1959 to replace the outgrown Essendon Airport. Prime Minister John Gorton opened the new facility in 1970 and launched a new era for Melbourne's connection to the world.
The facility still carries the name Tullamarine among locals and connects Victoria to destinations across Asia, the Pacific and beyond. Passengers move through modern terminals that reflect the evolution of Australian aviation since the seventies.
The Tullamarine Freeway leads directly to the terminals and allows access by car or bus from the city center. SkyBus coaches run regularly between the airport and downtown, while a rail link is currently under construction.
The facility was the first in Australia to receive ISO 14001 certification for environmental management. Aircraft can land and depart here around the clock without restrictions from night curfews.
