Churchill Island Marine National Park, Marine national park in Victoria, Australia
Churchill Island Marine National Park is a protected area along Phillip Island's eastern shore covering about 670 hectares of coastal waters. The park contains saltmarsh, mangrove fringes, and intertidal mudflats that form different habitats for wildlife.
The park was officially established in November 2002 and recognized as part of the Western Port Ramsar site. This designation highlighted its importance for international wetland protection.
The park serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds traveling between Asia and Australia, providing food and shelter during their journeys. Visitors can observe numerous bird species here, particularly during migration seasons when thousands pass through the area.
Visitors can explore the marine environment through canoeing, snorkeling, and birdwatching while following designated paths and observation points. Wear sturdy footwear and be aware of tide conditions, as some areas become more or less accessible depending on water levels.
Below the water's surface live populations of lampshells and stingrays that swim through extensive seagrass meadows. These underwater grasslands are vital for food and shelter for many marine animals in the park.
