The Metropolitan Fire Brigade headquarters opened in 1893, replacing the original station at 447 Little Bourke Street and operating until the 1970s.
The building represents the Queen Anne revival style with parapeted gables, steeply pitched roof, and decorative elements combining red brick and cement.
The Fire Services Museum of Victoria occupies the ground floor, displaying exhibits about the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and international firefighting equipment.
The watchtower remained continuously staffed for fire detection across Melbourne before the implementation of modern communication technologies.
