Victoria Park, Football venue in Abbotsford, Australia
Victoria Park is an oval stadium in Abbotsford, an inner suburb of Melbourne, with facilities for sporting events and community activities spread across twelve hectares. The venue includes grandstands on multiple sides, changing rooms, and open grass areas that follow the typical layout of Australian sporting grounds of this kind.
Frederick Trenerry Brown and David Abbot established the sports ground in 1879 on Dight's Paddock, former cattle grazing land. The facility developed into a central venue for Australian Rules Football during the 20th century and was later added to the Victorian Heritage Register.
The ground takes its name from the British monarch and served as home base for the Collingwood Football Club in Australian Rules for more than a century. Visitors today can still see the traditional grandstands and floodlights that reflect the site's long connection to local sporting life.
The ground holds 27,000 spectators and offers multiple entry points used during organized sporting events and public recreation activities. Visitors should note that the venue can fill up during major matches and that the open design provides limited shelter during weather changes.
In April 1948, 47,000 people gathered to watch a match between Collingwood and South Melbourne, which remains the highest attendance figure to this day. This crowd far exceeded the official capacity and shows how important this ground was to the local fan base.
