Morwell National Park, Nature reserve in Victoria, Australia
Morwell National Park is a nature reserve in the Strzelecki Ranges protecting around 565 hectares of wet sclerophyll forests and rainforest remnants. Today the area offers walking trails, parking facilities, and educational programs for visitors to explore the woodland landscape.
The park was established in 1966 following years of advocacy by members of the Latrobe Valley Field Naturalists Club, who began their campaign in the 1950s. Their persistence led to official protection for this forest area.
The park holds meaning for the Gunditjmara people, who have maintained a deep connection to the forests and their wildlife for countless generations. This relationship shapes how the land is understood and cared for today.
Several marked walking trails wind through the park, offering visitors options for exploring the forest at different difficulty levels. Parking is available and the park lies about 160 kilometers east of Melbourne along the Princes Highway.
The forest area harbors a remarkable collection of 320 plant species, including 44 different orchid varieties found nowhere else in the region. This botanical diversity makes it a special destination for nature enthusiasts.
