Pine Mountain, Granite summit in Victoria, Australia.
Pine Mountain is a red granite summit in northeastern Victoria, Australia, with steep eastern faces and small rock pools fed by several creeks running through the area. The exposed rock and scattered water features define the look of the mountain from base to top.
The red granite of the mountain formed deep underground and was pushed to the surface over millions of years through geological uplift. Softer rock around it eroded away over time, leaving the hard granite dome exposed as it stands today.
Pine Mountain sits within Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park in northeastern Victoria, where visitors come mainly to walk and watch wildlife. Black wallabies and eastern grey kangaroos are often seen along the trails.
Reaching the summit requires solid fitness and the ability to navigate on foot, as trails are not always well marked. Bring enough water and a map, and set aside a full day for the round trip.
The mountain shelters over 200 native plant species, including Grevillea jephcottii and Acacia phasmoides, which are rarely found outside this area. Walkers who look closely at the rock faces and slopes will notice plants growing in places that seem too harsh to support life.
