Gundagai, Regional administrative center in New South Wales, Australia.

Gundagai is a regional administrative center in the Riverina area of New South Wales, located where the Murrumbidgee River flows through the landscape. The town sits on land shaped by this river's presence and the surrounding terrain.

This region formed as a local government area in 1924 when two separate municipalities combined into one administrative structure. The area operated independently for over 90 years until merging with Cootamundra in 2016.

The Wiradjuri people called this place Willeblumma, meaning Possum Island, and gathered on the Murrumbidgee River floodplains for their communities. This heritage remains visible through local stories and the river's role in daily life.

The main administrative services are based on Sheridan Street, where the Council Chambers operate to serve the community. Visitors can navigate the town easily by car or on foot, with the river and surrounding roads providing clear orientation.

A massive flood in 1852 swept away the original riverside settlement, forcing the community to rebuild the town on higher ground. This disaster permanently shaped where and how the town was constructed afterward.
