Mogo Wildlife Park, Zoo in Mogo, Australia.
Mogo Wildlife Park is a small privately owned zoo in Mogo, on the south coast of New South Wales. It exhibits a large African savanna and a series of islands for primate species, and it has one of Australia's largest collections of primates. Unlike most small Australian zoos, it focuses on exotic species.
Mogo Zoo was bought in November 2019 by Featherdale Wildlife Park, which took over full ownership and operations from the end of that month, after years under owner Sally Padey. In December 2019 bushfires the town of Mogo was evacuated, but staff stayed to protect the animals, setting up fire protection measures. The park had earlier kept the only kea in any Australian zoo during the 1990s and the last Siberian tiger in Australasia, Kuldur, who died in June 1997 aged seventeen.
Mogo is a member of the Zoo and Aquarium Association, and its breeding work has produced cotton-top tamarins, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, red pandas and Sumatran tigers. In October 1999 it became the first zoo in New South Wales to breed snow leopards, when Sheva and Bhutan were born to Lena and Mangar. A later pair, Tenzin and Khumbu, followed in October 2003.
The zoo is open daily from morning to early afternoon, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended since paths wind through natural terrain. Parking and restroom facilities are available on-site along with designated areas for picnicking.
During the 2019 bushfires, staff members took smaller animals including monkeys and a red panda into their own homes to escape the approaching flames. This extraordinary action reveals how personally invested the staff are in protecting every single resident.
