Bethungra Spiral

Bethungra Spiral, Heritage railway spiral in Bethungra, Australia.

The Bethungra Spiral is a railway structure in Bethungra, New South Wales, featuring two separate tracks to handle train traffic. The northbound line follows an elevated circular route with tunnels and viaducts to manage the steep gradient.

The structure was built during the 1940s to replace the original single-track line from 1878. This redesign became necessary to handle heavier train loads and reduce the need for helper locomotives on the steep gradient.

The Epping Model Railway Club maintains an HO scale model of the Bethungra Spiral, displaying it at exhibitions across New South Wales.

A viewing platform along Bethungra Waterworks Road allows visitors to watch trains navigate the spiral from a clear vantage point. Free parking is available at the site, making it convenient for those passing through the area.

The structure uses two tunnels allowing the northbound track to pass underneath the original line and then curve back over itself at a higher elevation. This clever engineering solution lets the track gain the necessary altitude while crossing the historic route.
