The brick post office building features a five-bayed arcade with a loggia behind four arches, complemented by dressed stucco piers and face brick details.
Built in 1879 by Eberlin and Hoad according to Colonial Architect James Barnet's designs, the post office replaced previous rented premises at a cost of £2,300.
The post office shares its architectural period with the courthouse and police station, forming part of a significant civic building group in Tumut.
Located at 82-84 Wynyard Street, the two-story building contains retail postal services on the ground floor and former residential quarters above.
The building underwent substantial modifications in 1904, including the replacement of original wood shingles with an asymmetrical timber roof covered in corrugated iron.
