Tumut Post Office

Tumut Post Office is a two-story brick building on Wynyard Street with distinctive arcades across its front face. Five arches supported by dressed stucco piers create the main design feature, with postal services on the ground floor and former residential spaces upstairs.

The building was constructed in 1879 to replace temporary post office locations the town had used before. Major changes came in 1904 when the roof was completely redesigned with corrugated iron panels replacing the original wood shingles.

The post office reflects the importance Tumut held as a regional hub in the late 1800s. The crafted design and quality materials show how much local communities valued their civic institutions.

The building sits prominently on Wynyard Street and is easy to spot when walking through town. You can view the exterior from the street and take in the arcades and stonework details at your own pace.

The original roof design featured an uneven shape with wood shingles quite different from the symmetrical corrugated iron roof you see today. This major roof reconstruction altered the building's overall appearance and shows how structures from this period could change significantly over time.
