Rakiura Track, Circular hiking trail in Rakiura National Park, Stewart Island, New Zealand.
Rakiura Track is a circular hiking trail on the northern part of Stewart Island, New Zealand, passing through dense forest, along stretches of coastline, and over muddy ground. The route forms a loop that covers several different natural environments within a single walk.
Stewart Island saw heavy logging during the 1800s as European settlers moved in and cleared forest across the northern parts of the island. The forest that lines the trail today has grown back over that cleared land since that period.
The trail passes through areas where Māori people long gathered food from the forest and coastline, fishing and collecting seafood and plants. This connection to the land is still part of how the island is understood by those who live here.
Two huts and three campsites are available along the route, and booking in advance is required throughout the year. Spots fill up during busier seasons, so securing accommodation early is a good idea before setting out.
Stewart Island holds one of the largest remaining populations of the southern brown kiwi, and hikers walking in the evening often spot these birds foraging along the trail without any special effort. Kiwi are far more visible here than almost anywhere else in the country, making a late walk a genuine chance to see them in the open.
