Olveston Historic Home
Olveston Historic Home, House museum in Dunedin City, New Zealand
Olveston Historic Home is a Jacobean-style residence with multiple floors containing original furnishings, artworks, and decorative objects. The house displays an extensive collection of items from around the world that the owners acquired during their travels.
The residence was built in 1906 for the Theomin family, merchants who gathered objects from around the world during their travels. In 1966, Dorothy Theomin gave the property to the city of Dunedin.
The residence displays lived-in rooms and personal objects that reflect how a wealthy merchant family organized their daily life in the early 1900s. The spaces show the tastes and habits of people from that period.
Visitors join guided tours offered regularly throughout the day. Groups should book ahead to secure a spot and ensure a smooth visit.
The interior has been left exactly as the family left it, with every piece of furniture and object in its original place. This completeness makes it a rare example of an unaltered household from that era.
