Bethune's Gully, Nature reserve in North East Valley, New Zealand
Bethune's Gully is a nature reserve at the base of Mount Cargill featuring ancient forest groves, streams, and several walking trails through native bush. The land spans a substantial area with different routes suited to varying ability levels.
The land came under David Bethune's ownership in 1878, when he operated a sawmill and brick kiln on the property. It changed hands several times before the Dunedin City Council took over in 1955.
Native birds like tuis and bellbirds live among the old trees and make their calls heard throughout the valley as you walk. These species are woven into the experience of spending time in the forest.
Access is via Norwood Street in Normanby, where you will find parking available. The site has picnic areas, barbecue facilities, and a children's playground for family visits.
A mountainbiking event held here in 1996 resulted in bike trails being built and opened to the public. Those routes now form part of the regular trail system available to visitors.
