Rialto Cinema, Dunedin
Rialto Cinema, Dunedin, Heritage cinema in Moray Place, Dunedin, New Zealand.
Rialto Cinema operates six screening rooms within a restored building that blends Art Deco and Moorish architectural styles throughout its interior. The cinema's layout combines these two design approaches across its spaces, creating an unusual visual experience.
The building was constructed in 1916 as the Empire Theatre by architect Edmund Anscombe with seating for 2,000 people. Major renovations in the 1920s transformed its appearance and established the design elements visible today.
The cinema screens a variety of mainstream films, art house productions, and international works alongside live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre. Visitors experience a diverse program that balances popular releases with more artistic content.
The cinema sits 200 meters from The Octagon and is easily accessible by public transportation. Parking is available in the adjacent building on Moray Place.
One of the screening rooms features a ceiling with concealed lighting that creates a night sky effect. This design touch from the 1920s renovation remains a surprising sensory detail that goes unnoticed by many visitors.
