Fortune Theatre, Professional theatre company in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The Fortune Theatre was a professional theatre company operating in Dunedin, housed in a converted Methodist church building. The space contained two performance areas: a main hall seating around 230 people and a smaller studio for more intimate productions.
The theatre was established in 1973 and initially presented productions at a cinema club before relocating to a permanent home on Stuart Street in 1978. It remained an active cultural venue for more than 40 years until financial pressures forced its closure in 2018.
The venue served as a gathering place where locals experienced live performances and discovered stories from New Zealand writers. It was a space where the community came together to share theatrical moments and support homegrown talent.
The theatre is no longer operating and access to the building is not available. Visitors interested in its history can view the building from outside and learn more about its legacy through local resources and archives.
One particular production drew thousands of spectators and remained memorable for the city long after its run. These moments of success showed how deeply the theatre connected with audiences.
