Queenstown, Alpine resort town in Queenstown-Lakes District, New Zealand
Queenstown is a town in the Queenstown-Lakes District of New Zealand, sitting on the northern shore of Lake Wakatipu in the southern Otago region. The settlement stretches between the lake and the surrounding mountains, with the central area running directly along the water and residential zones spreading up the gentle slopes above the shoreline.
A wool shed became the region's first inn in 1863 after gold prospectors flooded into the surrounding valleys. The mining economy gradually gave way to tourism during the 20th century, transforming the small village into an international resort.
The settlement's name honors Queen Victoria and reflects the British roots of the first European settlers. Locals often gather along the waterfront and in the town center cafés, where the relaxed mountain culture meets international tourism.
Most visitors arrive through the nearby airport, located just a few kilometers southeast of the town center. The central area is easy to explore on foot, while buses and shuttles provide connections to outlying neighborhoods and recreation areas.
The region experiences four distinct seasons, allowing travelers to ski in winter and enjoy water sports on the lake in summer. Many film scenes from international productions were shot in the mountains and valleys surrounding the town.
