Shand's Emporium, Heritage wooden building in central Christchurch, New Zealand
Shand's Emporium is a two-story timber building with five offices featuring individual windows that display traditional colonial design and a narrow rectangular footprint. The structure shows typical commercial construction of its era, with careful detailing of the exterior and solid wooden framing throughout.
Built in 1860 on land owned by John Shand, it initially served professional offices before being converted to retail spaces in later years. These changes reflected how commercial buildings adapted to the city's evolving business needs.
The structure reflects how European merchants established their presence in early Christchurch through commercial and professional spaces. It shows how wooden buildings like this shaped the character of the growing city center.
The building sustained earthquake damage in 2010 and was relocated to Manchester Street in 2015, where it now houses a pub. Visitors can see the restored timber structure in its current location and observe how its historic features have been preserved.
The building was sold for just one dollar to Christchurch Heritage Limited, an unusual arrangement that demonstrates how much preserving this early commercial structure mattered. This symbolic transaction allowed a heritage organization to rescue and restore one of the city's oldest business buildings.
