Civic, Christchurch, Government building in central Christchurch, New Zealand.
The Civic is a modern administrative building in central Christchurch spanning seven stories, distinguished by large glass facades on its northern side and copper-clad council chambers. Inside, it features a soaring open interior space with meeting rooms, office areas, and public service counters connected by a pedestrian passageway running through the building.
The building originated as a Post Office from 1981 before being repurposed for new functions. A partnership between Ngai Tahu Property and Christchurch City Council in 2010 led to a major transformation into a modern civic center.
The entrance features Julia Morison's Knot installation, a striking presence that greets visitors immediately. Maori artworks, including Te Pou Herenga Waka carved by Fayne Robinson, are woven throughout the interior and shape how people experience the spaces.
The location provides good pedestrian access with connections throughout the building for easy navigation. The design features multiple entrances and clear spatial divisions that make it simple to find the services you need.
The building operates using an advanced tri-generation system powered by biogas that simultaneously produces heating, cooling, and electricity. This system allows it to function with carbon-neutral operations while remaining fully self-sufficient in energy.
