185 chairs, Memorial sculpture in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The installation features 185 white chairs arranged in rows on an open field, including dining chairs, armchairs, beanbags, and baby seats.
Created in 2013, this memorial pays tribute to the 185 individuals who died during the devastating Christchurch earthquake of February 22, 2011.
Each chair in the installation represents a specific person, with different seat types reflecting the individual characteristics of those who lost their lives.
The memorial requires regular maintenance to preserve its white painted chairs and remains accessible to visitors throughout the day without entrance fees.
The artist Peter Majendie selected different chair types rather than traditional memorial elements to represent the personal nature of each life lost.
