Founded in 1878 as the Colombo Street Methodist Church, this Category II heritage structure served the local Methodist congregation until its closure in 1971.
The building changed hands between religious denominations, including the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Christian Congregational Church of Samoa after 1971.

The church building met an unexpected end during the 2011 Christchurch earthquake when it was demolished without proper authorization from its owners.
