The Music Centre of Christchurch features Byzantine Revival architecture with ornamental designs and arches spread across multiple connected heritage buildings.
Established in 1994, the centre occupied former buildings of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions and Sacred Heart College, founded in 1881.
The facility provided performance spaces, rehearsal rooms, and teaching areas for 800 students who attended weekly classes with 80 music instructors.
After the 2011 earthquake caused extensive damage to the original buildings, operations moved to a new facility called The Piano on Antigua Street.
The chapel section represents one of the few examples of Byzantine Revival architectural style found in the Southern Hemisphere.
