Yealands Estate, Wine estate in Marlborough, New Zealand.
Yealands Estate is a winery spread across 1800 hectares in the Awatere Valley, part of Marlborough's wine region. The vineyard produces Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay varieties.
Peter Yealands founded this estate in 2008, and ownership transferred to Marlborough Lines, a community-owned power corporation, a decade later. This shift represented a change in how the property was managed going forward.
Sheep and chickens graze between the vines to naturally manage the vineyard, a visible choice that connects the place to New Zealand's farming roots. This integrated approach shapes how the landscape looks and functions throughout the year.
The estate sits in a large valley, so allow time for a complete visit. It helps to check opening hours and plan ahead when coming from other parts of the region.
The property runs on a 412-kilowatt solar array, one of the largest such installations powering a winery in New Zealand. This renewable energy source makes the wine production here completely offset from the grid.
