Tararua Forest Park

Tararua Forest Park covers land across two regions and contains extensive forests, mountain peaks, deep valleys, and numerous streams. The terrain features a mix of dense bush woodland transitioning to open ridges and clearings at higher elevations.

The area became protected in 1954, becoming New Zealand's first officially designated forest park in its conservation system. It has remained a cornerstone of the country's approach to safeguarding natural areas since then.

The land carries deep meaning for Māori tribes, who maintain ancestral ties to the mountains and rivers that flow through it. These connections remain visible today in how local communities relate to and value this terrain.

The park is open year-round, though the best time to visit depends on your planned activities. Hikers should prepare for changeable weather and muddy trails, particularly during wetter months.

A bird recovery project started in 2010 aimed at protecting native species and securing their survival through extensive pest control across the forests. This effort shows the intensive work being done to save birds found nowhere else in the world.
