Taranaki Maunga, Active stratovolcano in Taranaki, New Zealand

Mount Taranaki rises 2,518 meters from sea level, featuring a symmetrical volcanic cone with dense forests along its slopes and snow-covered summit.

Captain James Cook first spotted the mountain in 1770, leading to its alternative name Mount Egmont before European settlers reached the area.

The mountain holds significance in Māori mythology as a warrior who fled westward after losing a battle with other volcanoes over the affection of Pihanga.

The national park surrounding Mount Taranaki offers multiple hiking trails, skiing facilities on eastern slopes, and accommodation at Tahurangi Lodge for summer climbers.

Scientists estimate a 30 to 50 percent probability of volcanic eruption within the next 50 years, impacting over 110,000 residents in the surrounding region.
