Pukekura Park, Botanical garden in New Plymouth, New Zealand
Pukekura Park spans 52 hectares of landscaped grounds with native plants, lakes, walking trails, and formal flower displays in the heart of New Plymouth. The fernery showcases year-round collections of native species throughout the garden sections.
The park opened in 1876 under W. H. M. Browne's leadership, beginning its development into one of New Zealand's significant botanical collections. Over time, additional garden sections were added, expanding its botanical and landscape offerings.
The TSB Bowl of Brooklands functions as a natural amphitheater within the grounds, hosting the WOMAD festival and international performances year-round.
The park has multiple entry points and is easy to navigate, with well-marked paths suitable for different fitness levels. An on-site teahouse offers refreshments and resting spots throughout your visit.
Within the Brooklands section stands a Puriri tree estimated at around 2000 years old, one of the region's oldest living organisms. This ancient tree draws visitors interested in learning about the land's ancient plant life.
