The Kentish Hotel, Historic hotel in Waiuku, New Zealand
The Kentish Hotel is a historic establishment near Waiuku Harbor with traditional architecture, a central bar area, and multiple dining spaces across two levels. The building combines local food service with its original rooms and creates a comfortable place to eat and stay.
Edward Constable, an immigrant from Maidstone in Kent, built this place in 1851. The following year it received New Zealand's first continuous liquor license and became an important spot for trade and social gathering in the growing port town.
The walls inside display over 450 photographs that document New Zealand and local history. These images tell stories of important visits and shape how people understand the area's past.
The Portside Restaurant offers local wines and harbor views, with extra seating outside overlooking Tamakae Reserve. You will find different dining areas here depending on your mood and how much company you want.
During a fire in 1926, volunteers saved the building by covering it with wet sheets and spraying water continuously. This quick action saved the structure from destruction and remains an important part of local memory today.
