Wairere Falls

Wairere Falls is a waterfall in the Kaimai Range on New Zealand's North Island that plunges over two distinct cascades through dense native bush. The water drops across rocky outcrops, creating a striking natural landscape carved by the falling water.

The waterfall gained government protection in the early 1900s and became part of a scenic reserve system. This protection came after a shift in land ownership that transferred the area to state control.

The falls hold importance for Ngati Hinerangi people as the location where explorer Ngahue found sustenance during his return journey to Hawaiki.

The walking trail is straightforward to follow and has viewing spots at different points along the route. Wear sturdy footwear and take care on wet days, as paths can become slippery.

The waterfall flows over an active geological fault where the ground shifts subtly over time, changing the landscape gradually. This ongoing geological activity makes the site an interesting example of the living forces that shape the region.
