Lake Pupuke, Crater lake in Auckland Region, New Zealand
Lake Pupuke is a crater lake in the Auckland Region, situated between the suburbs of Takapuna and Milford with a shoreline of approximately 4.5 kilometers. The water reaches depths of about 57 meters at its deepest point.
The volcanic eruption that created the lake occurred roughly 193,200 years ago, making it one of the oldest features in the Auckland volcanic field. This formative event left a deep geological mark on the landscape.
The PumpHouse Theatre uses a former pump station building on the shore as a venue with multiple performance spaces for different events.
The lake supports water activities like kayaking, rowing, and windsurfing with several access points around the shore. Visitors should check conditions before visiting, as these vary depending on the season and weather.
Rainbow trout live in the water after being introduced in 2007, but they cannot breed because natural spawning grounds are missing. These fish rely entirely on restocking to survive in this lake.
