Musical Electronics Library, Electronic music tool library in Auckland, New Zealand
The Musical Electronics Library is a lending library for handcrafted electronic music devices based in Auckland, New Zealand. The instruments are stored in repurposed VHS cases, and members can borrow up to three at a time for use in their own projects.
The library was started in 2014 as part of the Nowhere Festival, with the goal of giving musicians access to electronic instruments. It has since grown into a meeting point for local sound artists and experimenters.
Musicians and artists collaborate through weekly maker nights at Auckland University of Technology, developing projects and sharing technical knowledge.
The library has regular opening hours on Saturdays, so you can look at the devices in person before choosing what to borrow. The lending period is long enough to work seriously on a project with the instruments.
Among the devices in the collection is a motorcycle sound-maker and a machine that generates experimental noise patterns, neither of which has a commercial equivalent. They were built by hand specifically for this library.
