Victoria Park Market, Historic marketplace in Freemans Bay, New Zealand
Victoria Park Market sits on the grounds of a former waste disposal facility in Freemans Bay and now contains galleries, workshops, studios, offices, restaurants, and shops. The complex spreads across several connected buildings that together create a lively venue for shopping, art exhibitions, and dining.
The site was originally a municipal waste incineration plant and depot built between 1905 and 1918, complete with stables for horses and a tall chimney for waste burning. After decades as an industrial site, it underwent major redevelopment and renovation completed in 2013 to become the market and cultural hub it is today.
The site bears the name of Queen Victoria and features a commemoration of notable New Zealanders such as Sir Edmund Hillary and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. This tribute reflects how locals honor figures who shaped their nation while creating a gathering space for visitors and residents.
The grounds are easy to walk around with buildings connected together, allowing visitors to move comfortably between shops, restaurants, and galleries. The area works well for a half-day visit, with the range of offerings providing something for different interests.
Ancient Pohutakawa trees grow in the market's courtyard, marking where the bay's shoreline once was before landfill work began in the 1870s. These trees silently remind visitors of how much the city's geography has changed over time.
